Last night, Our Revolution Western Maryland held the first forum for the candidates for Senate District 3. I am proud to announce that today Our Revolution Western Maryland endorsed my candidacy for the State Senate. The forum was an opportunity for the residents of Frederick to hear from each candidate about where we stand on the issues facing our community.
For me, it was a chance to share my vision for a 21st century Frederick. As a scientist, I work every day to leave this world a better place than I found it. Science is forward thinking, and our politics should be as well. When candidates ask for your vote, are they telling you their vision for the future, or rehashing the past?
As a working mom with two young kids, I understand the struggles that people go through every day in Frederick. How do you get started on your American dream when you’re drowning in student loan debt? When you bring your new child home, how do you survive financially when you have no paid family leave? When wages don’t even cover the cost of living, how do you break even, let alone get ahead?
As your senator, I will work to enact paid family leave, that can be used by all workers, whether they need it to take care of an aging parent, tend to their own illness, or bring home a new family member. I will work every day to develop a comprehensive, forward thinking transportation plan for Frederick, and beyond. We all agree that we need to fix transit in Maryland, and yet, year after year goes by with no improvements. We need a leader who can work collaboratively, find creative solutions, and dig in until we make modern transit and transportation a reality. Our economy, environment and quality of life demand it.
In 2018 we have the opportunity to define the future of Frederick. Now is the time for new voices, with diverse experiences and fresh perspectives. Now is the time for those left out or left behind to demand a seat at the table. Now is the time to come together and build a 21st century Frederick where everyone can thrive!
