At some level, every scientist harbors a secret desire to save the world. I dreamed of putting on a weird blue space suit and trying to unlock the secrets of the world’s deadliest viruses. For the past nine years, I’ve lived that dream, from Frederick to Uganda. Now I’m ready to step away from the bench and stand up for everyday Marylanders trying to live their dreams.
The needs of 21st century families require new solutions. Over 60% of families have two parents working, but childcare in Maryland costs more than college. Seventy percent of mothers with children under 18 are working, but America is one of a handful of countries with no guaranteed paid family leave. Where the federal government is failing, Maryland can lead.
Being a scientist requires passion, persistence, and perseverance. We must think critically, make informed decisions, and check our egos at the door. We work collaboratively to solve problems. We do it because we care; because we love it; because it allows us to give back. Let’s demand the same from our political leaders!
Join me in bringing truth and reason back to our politics. Send a scientist to the statehouse!
